ECHO ASIA’S ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PROCESS
Value chain-based approach and collaboration as core tenets of achieving circularity:
Design Out Waste from the Outset (Prevention over Recycling): This is a fundamental principle of the circular economy. Rather than focusing solely on recycling or donating waste after it’s generated, the primary goal is to minimize waste creation in the first place.
This means thoughtful planning of materials, designs, and processes to ensure they can be reused, repaired, or composted, eliminating the concept of “waste.” For events, this would include selecting reusable exhibition structures, minimizing single-use items, and designing displays for future re-purposing.
Implement a Comprehensive Circularity-Minded Event Policy and Roadmap. This includes setting specific, measurable targets for resource circularity. A concrete roadmap with phased targets is crucial for tracking progress and ensuring continuous improvement in all aspects of event planning, from procurement to post-event breakdown.
Prioritize Reusability, Repair, and Upcycling (The “Rs”): While the specifics of the “9Rs” (Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, Repurpose, Recycle, Recover) are often detailed in circular economy frameworks, the core idea for event production is to prioritize options that keep materials in use for as long as possible. This means opting for durable, modular event structures that can be easily reassembled for future events, repairing damaged items, and looking for opportunities to upcycle materials into new products or displays.
